High / low range on a H

This will probably sound dumb but does anyone know about a high/low transmission for a H model. (Similar to a sherman for the fords) I heard about them at a county fair pull day yesterday and I think my H might have one. There is a lever on the left side that seems to have a forward and back posistion and maybe a center posistion as well.

If I do have this feature is it rare?

If I do have this feature maybe I will be more serious about fixing this one up and playing aroung with it.
My serial number has the X1A suffix which I thought meant gasoline and low gears.

Any information appreciated.

Thanks in advance ... Norm43

Likely M&W, aftermarket, dealer or owner installed. It gives you a "live" PTO in that when you pull the lever back the tractor stops but the PTO keeps turning. You still have to push the main clutch to shift gears. M&W and Heisler also made 9 speeds which give 2 ranges in gears 1-4, 5th was not effected. The additional speeds occurred above the 5 mph 4th, ie 1st high was more then the normal speed in 4th. With both the low first and the M&W PTO, your tractor is worth more than the usual H, provided they both work properly.

If the lever is connected to a mechanism on the left brake drum, you have an M&W "hand clutch." It gives you the ability to stop the tractor without stopping the PTO or hydraulic pump. Pull the lever instead of pushing the clutch.

The downside to this system is that you can't shift. It works by breaking the connection between the left wheel and the differential.
