Farmall H remote cylinder help

Can anyone tell me how to get the end cap off a international remote cylinder on a farmall H? the number on the cylinder is 807, if this helps. Thanks

I don't know that particular cylinder (perhaps a pic?) but there are a couple types I've worked with.

1. welded...end cap doesn't come off. Rod packing is serviceable but the piston seal is not. Cylinder welded at assembly, once it starts bypassing inside (piston seal gone) it is throwaway.

2. tie-rods...remove tie rods usually via external hex nuts. Likely o-ring face seals cut into the end caps to seal up the cylinder body.

3. screw-on...the end cap threads on to the cylinder body (which is basically a threaded tube). Often a single allen setscrew keeps the end cap from starting to unscrew-off. A permutation I have seen (rarely) is that the body has a tapped hole and the end cap screws *into* the body.

the endcap on this cylinder looks like it slides into the tube and has some kind of locking ring on the inside. there is a small rectangular hole in the side of the tube close to the endcap, and you can see part of the ring down in the hole. looks like your supposed to press down on the ring inside the hole to unlock it and pull the endcap out, but it doesn't seem to want to come out. the endcap will wiggle a little, and you can turn it freely all the way around, but won't come out. i thought it was made to screw out, but it just turns in the tube. iv'e never worked on one that was made this way, but have rebuilt others like you mentioned. also, this is a single action cylinder. hope this helps. thanks

Get a magnifying glass and good light. Then look at the ring in the slot you mentioned. I believe it will require a tiny flat screwdriver to wind it out. It may require pushing in on the rotating part to unlock the ring. JimN

You have to turn the lock ring so the two ends are in or close to the little slot then take a small screw driver and work one end of the ring out of the groove. Takes a little time but they do come out.

Exactly. I have a pair of those cylinders, and the trick is to get one end of that clip out of the groove and then it just sort of rolls on out.
