Help ID tractor

I looked at a IH or Farmall today that I couldn't identify. It was a utility type tractor so I figure it is IH. I couldn't read the tag for a model # but it is a four cyl. diesel with glow plugs. The only piece of sheet metal is the hood which has a ridge down the center like a 460 and the headlites are in the grill. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks doorman

Go to Tractor Photos under Galleries to your left and look at 424, 444, 454, 464(?) it could be one of those.

It also sounds like a 340-utility-diesel is a possibility...but I don't know enough about that engine to say whether glow-plugs are used on the diesel or not.

The 340U and 460U have very similar styling...however the headlights in the grille may rule the above out.

doorman: Yesterday I was going to say 340 diesel, then I thought about those models CNKS mentions, could be one of those.

Does it have the old 5 speed transmission, possibly TA option? 5 speed would be 340. All those models CNKS mentions will have 4 speed with dual range transmission, some will have reverse on with hi-low.

340 will have U drawbar, fast hitch or 3 point conversion. The other models will have modern day factory 3 point.

doorman: I guess I'm having a brain fart here this morning. Your tractor definitely not a 340. It could be a 504. In my previous post every time I used 340, subsitute that for 504. A 504 will have 5 speed, possibly TA option, U drawbar, factory fast hitch or factory 3 point hitch.

Problem is I don't think 504 had lights in grill, I know the Farmall 504 didn't. The more I think about this, it has to be one of the models CNKS mentions.

But then there are also a few British models CNKS does not mention and sold mainly in Canada. Question in that case, does it have straight or swept back front axle. Straight axle and I'm thinking about 434, British assembled 444 and 384. British assembled 444 is different from Louisville assembled 444. If you live in US it would likely be Louisville 444 or in Canada a British 444.

There now, I have it more confused than ever.

Hugh, it has a swept back front axle like my 460 Utility. I didn't notice how many gears it had, but the rear top of the transmission cover is raised and it has a factory three point.
I may be wrong about the headlites in the grill, I may be having a senior moment.
The tractor is in NW Tennessee. I will take a closer look when I get back that way. It was raining when I saw it so I didn't spend much time. Thanks, doorman
