front cover removal?

Do I need to remove the nut of the crank to remove the front cover? I am trying to get the timing gear off.

Which tractor? Is there a damper pulley behind that nut? It probably needs to be pulled too in order to get the front cover off. Hal

Yes, you take the nut off to remove the pulley. then the cover will come off.

Yes - you'll need to remove the nut then pull the crank pulley to remove the front cover.

The nut is a 2-1/2" hex. Due to its position inside the pulley "dish" it can only be reached with a socket. If you don't own - or can't borrow - a 2-1/2" socket a wheel bearing locknut socket works fine and is chepaer than a standard 3/4" forged socket (I paid about $25 for mine...)

After the nut is removed USUALLY the pulley will slide easily off. However if it's stubborn a puller is required.

Thanks for everyones help. It is turning out to be more of a task then i thought. I didn't realize all the extra stuff you need to get out of the way first. Thanks for everyones help.
