Info on an 806D

I'm looking for a tractor for mowing and was wondering about the 806. Are they a decent, reliable tractor? I'm not that familiar with the IH tractors, my others have been blue. Here is the one I was considering, but need to get more info.

Tractor looks great.

Two things I would check personally:
1. Hydraulics: I would make sure they work to spec., pump, valves and handles.
2. Transmission: I would try the shifter under load in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. Does it lock up in gear?

Didn't look at your link(on dialup here still), but I think you'll find the overall opinion here on the forums is that the 806D is one of the best, most reliable tractors IH ever made...Of course, like anything, how it's been used and taken care of in the past will be the biggest factor....some guys can destroy an anvil with a plastic hammer. If it looks like it's been well taken care of and the price is in your ballpark, I'd say go for it. Ya can't buy a new one made that well and capable of what that is for anywhere near reasonable money anymore.

IMO, he 806D is one of the best tractors IH ever made. First tractor I ever purchased after taking over the farm on my own was a '67 806D. I recently purchased a '66 806D mainly to use as an auger tractor. Felt like old times when I got on it the first time. It also fits in with our other "tys": '66 706D (310) & '66 1206.

Shifting linkage is probably the weak point on that series tractor but it can be rebuilt for not all that much money. To really make one shift nice switch it over to the 56 series style shifters & linkage.

I like the comment about destroying an anvil with a plastic hammer.

We had a saying in the Marine Corps about the kind of guy who could screw up a crowbar. Only Marine language was a bit more blunt than "screw". Believe me, there are guys that can do it.

Unless you have a different 806 than the rest of us do, there is no 5th gear (unless you are counting 1st high or 3rd low with the TA back). They came with a Hi-Lo-Rev range transmission mated with a 4 gear speed transmission. Only issues I"ve witnessed with our 806 is the range transmission shifter"s sensitivity to any wear due to its close spacing and needing to pass from Hi to Lo to Neutral to get to Reverse. Most of the aluminum MCV pumps are reaching that age where they are giving up on the 06"s, so if it has slow steering and the oil pressure tell light comes on when you use the brakes and steering or the TA loses lockup under turning, expect to be replacing that. D-361s are bullet proof, but once they need a rebuild, get out the pocket book, because a lot of work needs to be done to get the rebuilds to hold together.

It seems the tractor is at a used equipment dealer, which they don't mention in the ad. They haven't gotten back to me on price or any of the other questions I asked, so I'm going to look elsewhere for a mowing tractor.
Thanks for the replies.
