Oh, That Darned Thing...

called the alternator, was only kinda doing it's job. Seems the alt might not have been spinning fast enough until almost wide open. For reasons unknown, the vr in the alt would continue to do it's thing until I reduced the engine speed, all the way & I have the engine turned down just to where it still idles smooth. Figured this out at about 8 this morning, down at the IH dealer. Bench tested it on a different tester (ancient, yet, expensive looking thing with lotsa neat gauges & lights & switches) that apparently put enough load on something to make it produce majic smoke. "Well, that don't happen often", sayeth the service man. To make a lengthy story a bit short, I opted to purchace a reman alt that charges at lower RPM's, installed it on my tractor & the rotten thing charges. Yay. My next miracle surgury will be removing a filter, in line, between the sediment bowl & strainer screen in the carb. That & the removal of a yellow filler neck from a gas can that's floating around in the gas tank. To JimN, Thresherman & the rest of you, I thank you kindly for your help & patience with my "dumb donkey" ;^). In the mean time, I'm off to catch a nap. Didn't sleep much last night & was up at 5. - Mike

To repair a con rod in a 392inch IH truck engine I needed to remove the trans. The torque converter stayed on the trans when I pulled it back. The flex plate had fractured at the ub and the Crank still had the center drive holes bolted to it. A 40 dollar part fixed it (and the rod noise as well!!!!!)
Assumptions are often a dramatic hill to climb. I am way glad it is fixed. JimN
