Governor Parts?

Does anyone make governor parts for a farmall H? Thought I had my governor issues worked out. Shut the tractor down and 10 minutes later it stuck wide open and would not idle down. Rpm's kept climbing so I am guessing that cause the weights are sloppy on their pivots that they are hanging up.

Are the weight pivots just a solid pin or roll pin or what?

Any other suggestions?

Can anyone suggest a good service manual for the letter series farmalls? In the family we have A-M so would rather buy one book.

It's been awhile since I had a governor apart, but I've got one on an H that is giving a bit of trouble so I'll likely need to refresh my memory fairly soon. I think the weights pivot on roll pins, but not only do those pins get worn, the holes in the weights also get wobbled out so that a new roll pin of the original diameter may not always fix the problem. I think I used some grade 5 1/4" bolts and nuts on at least one governor and staked the nut so it couldn't come loose.

There are other things that can go wrong inside. You'll never know until you remove the cover and have a look.

The IT IH-8 manual covers all of the letter series Farmall tractors as well as the Cub prior to 1957. If you need one, just send an email.

I think that Gov Parts are a waste of time. When a gov goes bad there are usually multiple wear issues. Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch usually has some really god used gov's for a fair price. That my suggestion. Henry

The weights, pins, springs and bearings and bushings are avaiable from CIH, at least they were 2 years ago when I rebuilt my Super H governor. The weights were $65 each so I welded in the holes on my old ones and redrilled them. The holes have to be just right but mine works great now.

Worn out weights and pins ordinarily make a governor very slow, not over speed. I drill them out and use oversize roll pins, have to use slightly smaller drill in weight retainer than in weight so pin is tight in retainer and free in weight. Also, if you do use a roll pin, position it so as the pivot point on roll pin is not over the groove in the pin. Make sure your govenor thrust bearing is good and intact and the washer is in behind it next to weights and if you have had the gear off shaft, key could be missing allowing weight assembly to turn freely on it's own. The 6 cyl engines didn't use a key and if the nut wasn't tightened correctly this would happen to them. I am going to assume the linkage between gov and carb are installed, adjusted and lined up correctly.

Well I did have a slow reaction too but though I thought I tweaked that out with the mixture screws. Its just acting very erradic. Sometime good sometimes overspeeding sometimes slow to react. Looking at putting a kit in the engine and going through it so the weights and pins have some wear and I am looking at my options and what to do with the governor. I like your idea of oversizing it.
