I was introduced to an elderly widow with an H for sale. She said it ran when she parked but couldn't remember how long ago. Sittin' in a dirt floor corn crib rusty but straight. 70% tires still holdong air. I noticed it had a small tank next to the gas tank with a fuel line from it to the sediment bowl. I couldn't make out the decal on the sheet metal by the tanks cover. What was this tank for? I posted the serial number in the subject line. She thought her husband bought it new in 1940. She remembers when they took the steel wheels off of it too. I sure want to be fair to the lady...she sounds as if she had a hard life and it looks like that hasn't changed at all! Any help would be great.

Well the H (if not stuck) is a 700 dollar H if it is given every benefit of the doubt. The second tank is a gasoline reservoir for starting it on gasoline and then switching to Distillate (remainder from cracking gasoline with old technology) which has low octane rating, and burns only when the engine is warmed up well.
It will run fine on gasoline, but has a lower compression ratio, and makes a bit less HP than a higher compression gasoline only tractor. The tanks are getting scarce, so that has authentic value. There were just too many made to make it special, though if a 40, it is in the second year of production. If you pay much more, it will be because you decide to. If it ran or had a compression check done it might be worth 800 to 1000. JimN

That small gas tank means its an"allfuel" or distilate basically you start the tractor on good gas then once the tractor is warmed up you can switch over to cheaper fuel, for a non running H i would off no more than 600

Yep, they are all right on. I paid $800 for my running H. It is a 1942 that was bought new by my Grandfather in Law. He could only get it on steel because of the war.
I would pay around $600 for it. You could go $700 if you really want to help her out. I would pay $600 and trim her trees instead. (That was serious, do some sort of yard work that she can't do)

According to the serial # it is a '42, still a wartime model.

FWIW, I gave $500 for a '49 M that was stuck. Paint was good, once I got all the dust & bird crap washed off, decals were faded, tires were >50%. For less than $150 I got it running, runs like a sewing machine.
