560 Farmall power steering system

A neighbor has a 560 Farmall that developed a steering problem in that it will turn to the right but won't turn to the left. I raised the front end off the ground and it turns both ways equally well---with the engine running and shut off. When you get to the turning limits either way it doesn't seem to load the engine or produce a hydraulic "squeal" like they usually do. The steering shaft is free and has about a quarter turn free play, engine on or off. Is there a pressure relief valve in this system? If so where is it located. (Parts schematic don't show one) I'm thinking it's either the power steering pump or a pressure relief valve stuck open, but need some wise counseling as to how to check this hyd pressure and what to do next. I've not been into this system before so thanks a bunch.

If it has power steering one way but not the other it is not the pump or relief vave. I would check the splined knuckle on the front end of the steering shaft. Those splines cannot be froze to the steering valve input shaft. That input shaft has to move laterally in or out as you turn the wheel left or right. That input shaft moves the control spool inside the control valve. If that knuckle is froze to the input shaft and the u-joint at the suport bracket mounted to the starter is not adjusted correctly the snap ring on the upper end of the steering shaft will limit the lateral movement of the steering spool and cause the problem you are experiencing.

Chuck, thanks, I didn't realize that was the way it works, however I did notice that the U joint did move laterally on the spline.
