im really stumped with this M

I thought I had this ole tractor going, had it started, sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders and trying to pick up the last one, It had ran for about a minute at a higher throtle and let out a flame outta the exhaust and popped a few times and that was it. I had checked the timeing, it seemed right, compression on #1 and rotor facing pretty close to #1 on cap. Any ways I had a earlyer post of what I had done, would you guys see if you can give me some advice.

Thanks, Derek

I'm no expert, but it may sound like it's starving for gas. Take a container, open up the drain on the carb, and let it drain for a couple of minutes, if you don't have a continuous strong flow.... continuous is the key word here, you have a restriction somewhere.

I did happen to take the bowl off,and had gas to about 1/2" from the top, I believe that I also sprayed carb cleaner in the main jet and it blew out it 2 different places, i couldn't even get it to fire with spraying gas in the uppper manifold plug.
Thanks, Derek

My 300 did the same thing to me once. It ended up being that the dist. cap was corroded on the contacts. Take the cap off and clean the probes real good.

Sticking valves will cause that type of problem as will one cylinder not firing and putting raw gas in the manifold. I would check compression and see if all of them have what they should. Also if it has sat for a long time sticking rings rust etc. can cause funny problems. If it sat a long time did you put oil ot MMO or ATF in the cylinders before trying to start it?? If you didn't you could have broken a ring or a few other bad things

How close is close when you talk about the rotor being close to #1? And which way, past or coming up on #1. If coming up your timing may be retarded too much. Do you have the correct cap?

Could be the timing weights in the distributor. Could also be you lost a tooth on the cam gear, in which case a) your valve timing could be off as well as the spark and b) you don't want it to run as that tooth can make a real mess running around in there.

I would look at the valve train to see if there is one or more pushrode off. Sticky valves will do it. JimN
