Went over a couple towns away today to look at a couple plows...I have a "42 M distillate..needs a good work-out. I figured to be on the safe side a 2x16 would pull about anything around here...wasn"t sure if the "ol m could handle a 3x14 that easily in good illinois dirt? you tell me? i"m from the chisel plow generation not the moldboard generation

i would say get the three 14's, I forget how the saying goes 3 plows at 2mph is faster then 2 plows at 3mph- you might be in 1st or second, dont plan on 4th gear plowing i dont think but when you get the new tires you will have a real nice set up for three 14's

Two 16 's are for the H. Any M worth its salt will pull 3 14's for a fun day of plowing. 3rd gear is fine and might even get a little 4th no and then. Henry

I agree with all the guys that say it will handle 3-14's BUT don't buy it!
With todays BT/CB/GT/High Population corn you will definately want the 16" plow. They can clear the trash a lot easier. The 14's just don't have the clearance for modern corn fields. If you are going to only plow wheat stubble or plan on discing ahead of the plow you will be ok with the 3-14.
Where are you located? I wish I would have never sold my 2-16. I will buy it if you don't.

Dad pulled a 3x14" with an H with Super H sleeves and pistons in NE Iowa... don't know why an M would not pull it okay most places. Most Ms in the area were pulling either 3x14" or 3x16", depending on the soil. As for trash, corn stalks, etc., a low clearance plow no matter if it's 14 or 16 " will have trouble... a higher clearance plow should not. As a kid we had a high clearance JD and a lower clearance IH, both 3x14" and the JD would go through anything we had without plugging up... the IH would sometimes plug. Chop or disc the stalks and no problem with either plow. Same with a SC and a FH 2x14".

I'm envious. Around my Dad's place you need a minimum of a good strong 400 to pull 3-14s effectively in most of the fields. The Super M will do it but it was all the old girl wants in 2nd.

I bought two #60 3-14s here in the last couple of years in hopes of pulling them with my Super H. Not around here, at least not without being down in 1st and having about 4 sets of weights on the wheels.

There's nothing like the sound of a 4-cylinder IH gas engine when the governor opens up.
