I found a 2-16 plow for sale locally. It's in good useable condition and comes with three new tires, however there's a 3"x5" chunk out of one of the moldboards right above the front of the share. Seller says he can weld a patch in easily. Is this an easy repair, or does it have to be perfect for dirt to roll over the moldboard? Should I have him fix it, or is this a deal-breaker?

If the plow is chaep enough let him fix it. It will look bad dont weld to the plow frog but only to the remaining moldboard. You can find a different moldboard later

If it's missing a chunk out of a moldboard, it's not in "good usable condition."

Frankly if one moldboard is wore so bad that it's breaking apart, then the other one probably isn't far behind. Take a good hard look, a moldboard that's razor sharp on the outer edge is just plain worn out.

Unless it's a newer plow, parts are going to be tough to come by. I personally would pass on it.

Wi Dave,
Around this part of Wisconsin (Sauk Co.) a trailer plow with good moldboards is always worth $250 (has to be complete, with coulters). Good tires are not that important, if they are too poor you can put on something that fits but are not good for vehicles. If the welder knows what he is doing he "might" get it right, but probably will need some grinding to make it smooth. See what he has when he is done; then if not too good offer $150.
I am thinking of buying a "parts plow" (#8), maybe you might need a moldboard off that???

What is the part number on the moldboard

(quoted from post at 14:57:40 07/28/09) Rootsy, moldboard # is IH 03132 HO

03132 is a 14" HSKA. It may be a common board depending on your location (to find a parts plow with that bottom). Crescent offers that board when they get back up and running. The only good way of fixing that is to cut out the worn out portion and patch in a piece from a good moldboard, rather than welding a patch on top. I would say a patch welded on top of the moldboard might cause scouring trouble, besides looking really ugly.

I would pay accordingly, keeping in mind you need another plow to get a good moldboard, or to get a patch from.
