Farmall m transmission gearshift will not go side to side

Hi there: I have been working on a 1948 Farmall m, with help from all you folks. I noticed that the trans shifter will not move from side to side, only up and down. I can get neutral too of course. The tractor i bought was sitting for about 5 years. Any ideas how to fix, can the shifter mechanism be accessed thru the top?? The farmer i bought it from said that it was working fine when he let it sit???

Are you sure it's in neutral? It sounds like it's also in some other gear besides the two you can shift into. Take the shift lever out and look inside at the rails to see if one is out of place when you have it in neutral, that happens a lot with old Farmalls. You'll need a long screwdriver or small pry bar to get it out of gear if that's the problem.
