I need your opinion. I don't get out around the Farmall circles like I should, but here's what I need to know. I have a fella that I'm going to make up an underslung or bottom exhaust system for his Cub tractor. He tells me I can make hundreds of them as everyone needs them. I make exhaust components out of top quality 304 stainless for all colors of tractors and a system as such runs considerably more expensive that a tin exhaust, but lasts a lifetime.
With the economy in the condition it is and the tooling costs involved, my question is, Is there really that much demand for this type of exhaust?
I can likely recover the tooling cost in the first 10 systems. But the bottom line is, will there be a demand for these down the road?
What do you think?

Couple of things. I had the underslung exhaust on my Cub. However, for every 10 Cubs I've seen since it seemed 9 of them had the straight-up exhaust. Which is just to say it is not on *every* cub.

Next, what are we talking here, $100, $200, $500?

They may not be stainless, but they are affordable. I'm not sure when he started selling them or who his supplier is but I am glad they are available.

It is a total guessing game, but my somewhat educated guess is that a small handfull of folks that own Cubs which are strictly trailer queen show tractors will want the stainless exhaust, and a few more folks that own Cubs which are still working/using tractors will want an underslung system made of common materials because it is less costly and will still complain about the cost.

I honestly do think there is a market for such a product, but I don't know how big that market is.

Pretty much every Farmall Cub and offset Cub Loboy made from 1955 on has the underslung exhaust. That's a pretty big market, relatively speaking. I own two of that style myself. Neither pipe is in great shape, but neither is close to needing replacement yet.

A plain steel pipe is about $90 last I checked. Pretty spendy.

Talk to the big boys like Steiner, OEM Tractor Parts, etc. They'll know how to price it and if there is a market. Let them sell it, too. They'll move alot more product than you can unless you do alot of advertising. Don't give either one an exclusive and make sure you retain the right to do your own retail selling.

In Steves defense. Why let the other guys sell his product when he has his own business. Crum Equipment Co. www.crumequip.com

My guess is that you won't sell hundreds of them unless the cost is comparable to current replacements ($70 - $115) as they will outlast most current collectors anyway.

Far more Cubs were sold over the years with a vertical exhaust than with a underslung exhaust, and I imagine most owners of Cubs with the vertical exhaust want to keep it that way.

I would like to have two pipes, but it would depend on the price. Any idea what it would take? Thoughts of making a stainless IH muffler to go with it? It must have the correct whistle cut/form in the end.
