VAPOR LOCK??... 1486 IH

I have a IH 1486. The stupid thing will start up easy when it is cold, But once it has been warmed up it seams like the engine gets tight and the starter will hardly turn the engine. I was told it was from vapor lock (unreliable source). Anyway, I have to let the engine cool off before I can start it again. Have any Idea, please let me know.

Ummmm.....diesel engines are not susceptible to vapor lock(!)

More likely your problem is a failing starter. Does the engine run OK warm and coast down normally when you shut it off?

If it does your starter is losing power when it gets hot. Be looking at the starter and possibly the starter power circuit wiring.

Well, I guess the starter is a strong possibility.
It just kind of throws me off that it turns over good when cold. You think the starter gets week when it gets hot?

I had an old pick-up that did the same thing, started good cold, would not crank over warm. Replaced the starter, problem solved. Yeh, its not a tractor, but same concept...

Commonly referred to heat soak as the heat from the engine gets into the starter and breaks down insulation for the field windings causing a partial short.

I had the same problem in my 80 chevy. Had a rebuilt engine and headers. Burnt the first one up in about the first 500 miles cause the new engine was tight maybe too tight and ran really hot.
