Need help with brush killer

My Dad passed away a year ago and Mom asked me to go through some of his stuff. I found a gal jug of Gordans brushmaster 2-4-D. The warning part of the lable is there but the instructions on how to use and what to mix it with and how much is missing. I have a bunch of poison ivy on my place I would love to spray this stuff on but need some instruction on the proper way to use it.
Thank you,
Paul Shuler

I quit using the stuff but they sold it at TSC maybe Orscheln and I almost think wally world may carry it now.

But Google the name with label and instructions and I'd bet you find it online. Probably at the Gordon's website.

Never mind I opened a new window googled it and found the label at Gordon's website.

here is the url below at pbigordon.com

Paul: After you use the several ounces Gordon suggested, bring the jug to Ontario, and sell it on the black market. Our government passed a law banning the cosmetic use of chemical pesticides by home owner's. 2-4-D is one of the hot lawn care items.

Hugh, I hope external_link doesn't find out. If the US does that, I'm going to have to buy a 50 gallon drum of 2,4-D. Should last me until I die (and it won't be from 2,4-D -- been using the stuff for 37 years). Cosmetic, do they mean a planted lawn, or if you have a small acreage and don't farm, as I do, is it prohibited also? Could use Banvel (dicamba), they probably banned it also. I suppose you can still buy Roundup, you won't have to mow then.

HUGH: From what I gather, you have been around A LOT of farming in your time... 2-4-D is an HERBICIDE, not a pesticide... Its not like he has a jug of Malithion or a can of Phostox, or a pack of Timic (gets rid of stray dogs quick!).

Hi Paul, I know MFA stores have it but I get a rtu spray bottle that is labled to kill Poison Ivy, If I remember right 24D is a broad leaf killer.

CNKS: Our farmers are all lisenced pesticide users thus this new law affects them very little.

The new law is provincial, not very well thought out either. There is a list of chemicals banned for use just about everywhere except golf courses or on farms. They call it cosmetic however they also banned that ( insecticide-fungicide) dust everyone uses on vegetable garden, particularly tomatoes. They've already had to back down on a couple of items used for mosquito control.

I see another chalange coming, we also have a Federal Act called the Noxious Weed Act. There are a list of weeds folks must control by law regardless of type of property. I can see this will get interesting.

Charles,

FYI Hugh is 100% correct in his use of the term "pesticide"

"Pesticide" is an all inclusive term that INCLUDES insecticides, HERBICIDES, nematicides, rodentcides, and many others.

Or if you really want to nuke things, "tank mix" 2-4-D with RoundUp. Will kill most anything, including giant ragweed. Just mix the two per label instructions and combine. But be careful around things you don't want to eliminate! We lovingly call it "liquid hoe."

The "liquid hoe" is good stuff. I have used it on occassion if an area needed to be pretty much sterilized. Normally I just use Crossbow, Grazeon, and other broadleaf killers. I like my grass, except under fences. There I use the "liquid hoe"!

Just give the U.S. some time. Under the guidance of our new president "Big-Chief-Smokes-a-Lot" we will soon catch up to Canada with all of our rules and regulations!

Kansas and other states have had noxious weed laws for years, they are not enforcable.

In that stance, I stand corrected! I have been researching an Applicators License for LA and it is called a "Pesticide Applicators License"... I was under the impression it followed the guidelines that insecticide applicators use since it started there. Here you can buy small amounts of 2-4-D (like a quart) but not a 1 gal, 2.5 gal, or 55 gal quanity w/o a license. I need to purchase so I can start whipping my land into nice pasture. I need to get rid of all the funky weeds that follow a clearcut and land clearing. I have peeps that can get it and have offered, but the license is free for a personal license and last 3 years. The commercial license is required for people spraying for hire and it cost like $300/year. This includes lawn care services and landscapers!

For nuking that big stuff like big areas of 6 foot tall giant ragweed, I use a strong 24d mix and thrown in a couple tablespoons of tordon rtu per gallon. They start shriveling up in a few hours.

Thats what I am dealing with. 5-7 ft high weeds. Where I have bush hogged, I can see grass is there. I plan to hit it after the weeds start growing back and then knock them on there butts!

CNKS: The Noxious Weed Act here in Canada is a Federal Act. It takes a complaint, but they will act. They have the power to move in an clean it up, then send you the bill. If one refuses, it can be added to the property taxes. I saw this with 20 acres of farmland, folks thought was my land. They complained and I got a visit from the weed inspector. I politely sent him off to see my neighbor, who actually owned the land.

We have much the same in some municipalities in an Unsightly Premises Act. Government will send warning, then if nothing is done they can hire a contractor, clean up and send you the bill. I ran across this one a few years back. I was buying a property with some run down buildings. I advised the vendor I would be demolishing the buildings. He said, "When your at the County Office applying for your building permit, sewer permit, etc., would you slip in see this gentleman, tell him your plans as I've already received notice of demolishion under Unsightly Premises Act." The gentleman was a person I knew, not well, but we were acquainted. He advised this would be great as they don't like enforcing the Act. I had a backhoe in to dig perk test holes, then all hell broke loose. I got waved down on road one day by the same Act enforcement guy. He said, "Hugh you indicated you were demolishing those buildings, but when? You managed to get in there with a backhoe dig perk test holes without any of the neighbor seeing who. Since the County was notoriously slow on getting out building permits, I advised him, work would commence when I had my permits to build and move in. Took 6 days, average was close to 6 months. Sometimes these laws can work in your favour.
