Farmall 450 LP ?

Hello,
My farmall 450 on LP runs for about 10 min then sputters and backfires through the exhaust and dies. Wont start back up for 30 min to 1 hour later. installed a new temp gauge only gets to 160 took out thermostat to see if that was the problem still did the same thing. any ideas. even if I just let it sit and idle it starts to act like its running hot and back fires. does the same thing under load or just driving. runs for about 10 min then tuckers out. please help

I think that you will find that you do not have coolant circulating through the convertor/regulator. After 10 minutes of running the without coolant flow the convertor will be so cold that it can no longer vaporize the fuel and the engine will flood out causing the sputtering and backfire.

If your antifreeze is not strong enough the coolant may be freezing in the convertor. You can try starting it on vapor only until it is warmed up.

I only start and run on vapor, I never open the liquid side. There is plenty of antifreeze. What would cause the coolant not to circulate through the converter/regulator. To check this do I just need to crack the line and see if coolant is flowing? Would a clogged LP filter cause this also? Thank you,
Albert

.Hey Al,I had hoped one of the in house Farmall mechanics would reply by now.I know only a little about ford LP systems,so don't bet on what I tell you.It sounds much like water in the fuel tank freezing when it reachs the vaporizer(what I think was refered to as"converter").You might put about 1/4 oz fuel alcohol in the vapor line between tank and vaporizer.Reconnect line and turn on vapor and start the engine. If this extends the run time dramaticly, ask your fuel supplier to purge the water and/or add alcohol to tank.A more crude test would be to heat vaporizer and pressure regulator with heat gun or blow-dryer to see if it will restart in less time.Do not use flame to heat anything.Good luck

The hoses going into and out of the converter should both be warm along with the converter. Hoses that stay cool would indicate loss of coolant flow.

How much fuel do you have on the tank? Does the bottom of the tank get cold? When you are running on vapor the tank becomes the converter, changing the liquid propane to vapor. As the tank cools from you drawing off vapor, the pressure inside the tank will drop. Once the engine has been running a few minutes you need to open the liquid valve. That will allow the engine heat to covert the LP rather than depending on the fuel tank to do the job. You may be running too lean as the pressure drops in the tank.

I pulled the drain plug on the bottom of the converter and antifreeze was present. The vapor fuel lines stay cool not cold. The converter also stays cool not cold. Checked the filter looks fine. Started it on vapor then switched to liquid made no difference on run time. Tank does not get cold just cool at the lower level where the fuel level is. Tractor ran fine before just started doing this recently. I haven"t messed with any adjustments. Usually it runs strong all the way tell empty. But last few time I thought it was out of fuel it only took about 15 gallons. it dies out like its running out of fuel. How hard would it be to convert to Gas? Is it just a tank and carb change out?

Have you checked to make sure you are not losing spark when it starts to die? That will also give you the symptoms you are describing.
