Help, I'm losing my mind

After working through a number of irritating issues on my H I finally had it what I thought was finished. And now.....I am getting oil dripping out of the jar type pre-cleaner. How is this possible??? The engine is running great and the air goes DOWN the pipe!!!! I cleaned the inside of the pipe and the inside of the pre cleaner but after the engine runs for awhile I get oil accummulating in the dome of the pre-cleaner and eventually it builds up enough to run down the inside of the dome into the jar and out of the louvers. The odd thing is that the inside of the air cleaner intake tube is not oily. Any ideas? This has me baffled. Oh, I forgot to mention that I tried lowering the oil level in the bottom so that it is below the intake pipe just to what happens and it still does this only not as badly. Help.

What weight oil are you using? The air and dirt go down the pipe -- the oil goes up into the mesh. If it is too light it can be drawn up and out of the mesh. If you cleaned the mesh with kerosene or whatever and did not drain it out good, what you see could be a kero/oil mixture?

I suspect you have excessive blowby in the motor and the oil is being forced out of the back of the head through the pipe that connects to the top of the aircleaner. I would try to clean the brass brillowpad looking filter that is on the right side of the motor in the cover that goes over the pushrods. This opinion is from personal experience on my H
OR is the motor backfiring through the carb and forcing oil out of the cup and up?
Let us know what you find out.

The engine is completely rebuilt. All tubes and screens are clean. If oil were coming from the breather tube wouldn't you think the downward air flow would carry it with it??

I like this reply. Take off the pre cleaner and use a flashlight to look down the hole when running If oily mist is coming into the stack from the Valve cover, it will show up pretty easily. The "road draft tube" Vent on the crankcase might be plugged. (did you modify any component of the connection tube to the Air cleaner, or inside the Valve cover, there is usually a very small hole that this sucks through. JimN

Switch to 30. You are closer to SAE 5 than to 30. Multi weights are for easy starting and are useful in variable temperatures and do not get to the top number until hot, which the air cleaner never does.

All tubes are original and the small hole in the tube inside the valve cover that connects the governor to the air cleaner is clear. I did look into the tube while running and can't see anything. There is a small amount of dirty oil at the end of the tube where it enters the stack. The walls of the stack tube are dry above the entry point of the breather tube ????

I think that the oil in the cup is the issue. Put in straight wt oil and I bet the deposits go away. 5 wt oil is much thinner than 30 at ambient temps. The air cleaner always gets fresh cool air, so it never heats up. The air is actually a pulse flow into the intake, this will splash the oil. It gets dirty from cleaning. Cheap fix if it works. Best of luck. JimN
