This is a question that is on a JD but thinking the principle would be the same.
Turn the key on and it rolls the engine but doesn't want to start. While turning the key off IT FIRES UP.

Also can I put a push button on like my 756 instead of just a key start.

The johnny is a 4010 gasser.

Sounds like the contact is buggered in the 3rd position (momentary or spring-return) of the start switch and so you are just barely making the contact going (presumably) clockwise, then the contact makes strongly going counterclockwise just for a second as you wipe by on the way to off.

A starter push button is not a big deal, just allow it to be energized in the 2nd position only and wire it to do the same electrical job as the 3rd momentary position.

....if these abstractions are making sense.

Seen that happen before. If it is set up to switch around the ballast resister if it has one that is there is a problem in the wiring there. So tractors, cars and truck are set up so that when in the start position the ballast resister is taken out of the system and that in turn gives a stronger spark for starting but if a wire brakes etc or the switch goes bad you end up with no spark when turning the engine over so when you let the ket loose from cranking it starts because it has spark

(quoted from post at 05:15:08 07/20/09) See if it has a ballast resistor could be defective. Hal

If the ballast resistor were defective, it would NOT run when you released the key. It would only run while you held the key.

On that 4010, I would guess that there is a wire that runs from a post on the solenoid straight to the ignition coil. Like someone else said, this is a "booster" to provide 12V to the coil to get a hotter spark at start time.

Normally power runs through a ballast resistor which provides 6V to the coil. You can't run 12V to the coil all the time or it will burn out.

I would suspect that there is a problem with this wire, or with the solenoid.
