Generator vs Alternator

Hello. I just got me a 1943 Farmall M and would like to know if I can tell if it has a generator or altrenator just by looking at it. Has not battery on it yet. I think I need to get the 6Volt one. THANKS

A generator is long and skinny, while an alternator is short and fat.

It is probably 12 volts if converted to an alternator, as 6V are generally not available.

May not have attached regulator on generator.

A generator will look a bit like a starter motor. An alternator will look just like the one on your car (and there are no six volt alternators).

There might not have been from the factory, but 6v alternators are sure available aftermarket, even positive ground. They look just like the factory 12v/neg gnd, but use different reg & diode sets.

To change a 10SI alternator to six volts negative ground, all you have to do is replace the regulator. If you want to go from negative ground to positive ground you have to change the diodes.

John: Oh yes there are 6 volt alternators. I've had one for 17 years. Gm Delco 10SI, all you need do is change the internal regulator.
