Baling with 1086, shifted TA from low to high when all hell broke loose.Loud high-pitched grind/screech, red hyd press. light on, no PTO,power steering,3pt.etc. Unhooked baler drove short distance to yard and shut off.Now I see what looks like crankcase oil dripping from clutch inspection plate. So whaddya think? How badly am I screwed? Thanks in advance for any advice or diagnosis.

The PTO drive gear has broken or the splines have stripped out on the clutch cover, common problem with these tractors. Your going to have to split the tractor to replace the pto drive gear and most likelly the clutch too.

the loss of hydraulics and the sound suggests stripped IPTO shaft/pressure plate. See posts below.

that wouldn't usually make an oil leak though... you sure it's not hyd oil?

if it is lube oil, about the only place it could leak would be the rear crank seal. got to pull the flywheel, kind of a pain to get the old seal out, pretty easy to put the new one in. a new one would come with a wear sleeve too.

Thanks all who helped,I wondered about rear seal as well, not sure that it's crankcase oil, black color suggests that. I guess we'll find out when tractor is split.Odd thing though, recent oil change means relatively clean oil on dipstick. Could some leaked oil either hyd. or crankcase have caused normally dry clutch to slip enough to discolor whatever leaked?Just a shot in the dark. Thanks again, Mazemaster, Allan, and Scott.

It is not the lease bit unusual for transmission oil to leak out when the PTO splines fail. There is a seal inside that gear which has the splines worn off. As it slips in the pressure plate it is wiggled around the oil will come past the seal.

You will need to resurface the flywheel when you replace the clutch. Once the flywheel is off you can see if the rear crankshaft seal is leaking.
