Farmall M basics

HI guys,
Don't normally come down to this site. Tractor talk and combines usually.
Been kicking around the idea of an M for a while. I need a loader for odds and ends. And a 3 pt. , and wide front also. So my question is on the years and the evolution of the M as to making things better.
I hear stuff about belly pumps , and super m's etc.
If you had to buy one , what year would be the best or better of the years.
I have a case backhoe so i don't need a loader for heavy lifting, just a handy loader for lighter stuff. I'd like a 3 pt cause i have alot of equip set up for that.
Live hydraulics? some do some don't.?????? I have a ford 861 that does all my stuff now but i've always liked the M's.
If ya all could kick some ideas my way it would really be appreciated

Thanks all

M has no live any thing but the Super M has live hyds. Neither one has 3 point from the factory and very few had a wide front end on them. I have a I think 1951 M sitting right here on the place that needs a new home but has none of what you want other then it is an M

Live hyraulics came in about '53 on the Super M. Some of the older M tractors have live hydraulics by virtue of an M&W pump. Power steering on the M and SM were all aftermarket setups from Behlen or Charlynn. A 3pt hitch is handy, but make sure you get a good one. I have one that's functional, but not a real good one, and it is an occasional source of frustration.
The Farmall M is a great tractor, and there's not a lot of differece between the early ones and those that were built more than a decade later. The SM is an improved tractor, but still has the solid M feel to it.
For what you want to do with it, you might consider a Farmall 400 or 450. Most had power steering, they came with live hydraulics and pto, and most came with the TA feature, giving 10 forward speeds instead of 5.

A Super MTA would be a nice one. Lots of power, live hydraulics, live PTO. Just add a wide front and 3pt if it does not have it. The Torque Amplifier is also nice. You can usually get a good loader for them, they are around and usually pretty cheap since everyone now uses skid-steers.

Any M will work for you. You will just need to add the live pump, power steering if you want it and the 3 point. If you aren't in a rush to find one keep your eye out. You will likely find one out there with all or part of what you are looking for. Much cheaper to get it that way than to buya good running and painted M for 2K and then add PS 600 with pump around here and a 3pt, 7-900 and loader 2-4 k for a fully hydro decent loader. Not trying to scare you. When you are don you'll have a tractor worth 2-3k for the 4-5 k invested. Some don't care some do. Oh and a wide front 1k or so. Just take your time. I bet you'll find an M or SM with everything you are looking for sans 3 pt and loader for under 2. Then you will be in business. Around here they go for 1k in working clothes and 1900 or so parade condition with ps, live hydro, and WFE. (wifes uncle sold one last december).

Thanks guys
Really helps. I have no problem piecing one together. Really just didn't know all the differences over the years of the tractor.
Again thanks to All the replies.
