Hi,Jim N
I want to thank you again for all your help with the pertronix ignition system, all seems to be good to go.
The only question that I have and this mabe my imagination is that when I throttle up the tractor to fast it seems to sputter untill the govener catches up with the rpms.I have taken many road tests up hills in 5th gear and all seems to be well at full throttle. To much gas to fast with no load? Main jet is set @3turns out by the book and has been rebuilt in the last 4 years looking for input Paul SMTA

I have an SMTA. It used to do the catch up thing when I accelerated, I adjusted timing and that seemed to help. I also had the pertronix ignition until recently. I took advice from ChadS and put lighter springs on the distributor advance, I don't know how much that helped. I don't pull it but use it on a 12 foot hydroswing swather in heavy hay. My main jet is probably at 4 or 5 turns out when I pull it hard like that. Best way to set it for load is with a constant load like a Dyno. I usually back off the main jet when not on the swather to help with economy. I set my RPMs up a little, about 2100 on the tach I had. I don't care for it to run faster but want to be able to hold the RPMs under load. On my throttle 5 is near the normal full RPM for PTO work, I run there most of the time but go to 6 with the swather. I don't want to make a hot rod out of it, just need it to do the work I need done. You might post over on the pulling forum for some more suggestions.

Make Shure you Adjust your TIMING! Pretronix when installed are usualy more Advanced!

Make Shure you ajust it Back so it will Loug!

The Tractor Vet, and Hayfarmer have answered the question well.running a timing light on it when the static timing is set at TDC, will tell the tale on advance operation in the distributor housing. Factory advance rate and total are OK. Plus 3 to 5 degrees is possible if the compression is in the 120 range. If higher, it will detonate under load (not good) Other than that leave it stock unless you are "racing" it. JimN

They do a lot better if they have had the up date kit in the dist. installed as it will Limit the total advance to 27-28 degrees and they will lug a lot better And here again running higtest gas or 93 or better will get ya more Been down this road many times . On my own S/MTA with just the flat top M&W pistons and the stock head with only minor tweeking of the dist I make just a whisker over 60 HP, My one buddy's S/MTA with the 8500 foot high alt. pistons and a stock 450 head and a stock rebuilt cam that was built up and reground to factory spec. a stock 450 manifold and just a sight bit of dist. work and carb work is over 94and will put a 706 gasser to shame.

Thanks, thats should help me get a few 10ths mph ground speed by turning up engin rpm.the smta is just a bit slower than the others i ride with.
