42' Farmall A Steering Slop

Two real trouble spots:
If the worm bearings are bad/loose check this. Turn the wheel to the right till the tires just start to turn on the ground. Have someone hold it there against the turning effort. Use a magic marker to mark the shaft around where it enters the box and disappears. Turn the wheel the other way until the wheels again begin to turn on the ground keep going till the mark is back at the same place. Look carefully at where you made the mark. The mark should still be very close if not at the same place you made it. If it is moved out any, the bearings are worn, or out of adjustment in the Worm. The big nut on the far end can tighten them, but id worn, it will bind and not do well. The shaft must turn easily if the front wheels are off of the ground.
The steering arm under the front can also be loose on the main shaft. It is either a tapered square shank, or a taper with woodruff keys. These can be partially sheared, or augered out sockets. Replacing with larger Keys is possible to save the existing parts. Machine shop, or deft touch with a Dremel Grinder.
THe square ones need to be looked at to see where the wear is and may need to have a new part or two to fix it correctly. JimN

You didnt say where the play realy is. Start with the tie-rods you can thighten them some unless they are agg-shaped then with a disc grinder you and use a calipers and get them round again. Next is the out-put shaft it will be square and can be snugged up by getting the bolt that hold it to the shaft tight. T o do that you realy need to remove the axel. I would replace the bolt with a new one. Now inside of the gearbox it can be two bushings two bearings and a new key. Do the easy thingw first. I have rebuilt several replaced the two seals then filled with 90wt and it will be like new again. The worm and gear are most likely good enough and costly to replace. Your total parts to renew bearings and seals and bushings will run around 50. T o grease the spindles its best to have the tractor jacked up to remove the pressure on the bottom of the spindle and it will take grease better. good luck and have fun.

Thanks for the info. I had ,already tightened tie rods, and removed any play outside the Gear box.The problems are in the box for sure. I'll try your suggestions and Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. This is my first Tractor project and I'm learning a lot.
