Timing my H with a light

I"d like to use a timing light to set the timing on my H. The operator"s manual describes a pretty labor intensive prodcedure that doesn"t seem like it would be as accurate as using a light. Question, what rpm do I set it at and where to time it? I think TDC or a little after shold be correct. The book says (unlike most cars) to never time it before TDC.

You can time it with a lite if you have a distributor. Use No1 plug near the radiator and have the engine at an idle. You time it to the first notch on the damper pulley. Hal

Expanding on Hal's advice below, once you get the timing at slow idle set at TDC gradually run the RPM's up while watching the timing. It should advance to 35 - 40 deg BTDC before the engine reaches full RPM.

If it does not the centrifugal advance (inside the distributor) needs attention.

If your tractor is 6 volt and you do not have a 6 volt timing light you will need to have a 12 volt battery handy to power the 12 volt timing light. Karl

About a month ago I screwed up the distributor on super a and had to replace it. I used a Penske (sp) timing light that I bought from Sears many years a go - it works on 6v or 12v. Plus I used a dwell meter to get the points properly adjusted. Hope the helps. J Ashcraft
