856D not charging

The "gen" light is always on and it does not keep the batteries charged. I might volunteer to look at it next week. Did these tractors come with a Generator or an alternator? I would start by taking the alternator to a Parts store to test it. I have a couple of Delco alternators here that take a four wire plug. Could one of them be converted to work with the two wire plug that is on the tractor? If the alternator is not the problem, what is the next most likely problem?
Is the idiot light wired the same as a voltmeter would be wired, or like an ampmeter? I have both type of gauge that I can remove from tractors to test the systems.
Thank you Steve

The posts on Crazy red power have a lead to a Delco Alternator chart that should help sort them.
Idiot lights are wired in like a hose coupler. In the #1 lead to ignition power. JimN

856 came with alternator with external mechanical voltage regulator. Very easy to convert it to an internal electronic reglator unit.I have several old externally regulated alternators laying around and no one even wants them for a core.

The alternator looks to be new but of course that doesn't mean anything. I assumed it had an internal voltage regulator because I had not seen one on the tractor. I will have him bring his manual over with the tractor and look it over next week.
Thank you
Steve
