Grease removal

Any suggestions on removing the really old grease (1930) on my engine? Hard as a rock. Pressure washer won"t touch it.

I haven't got around to trying it yet, but plenty of folks suggest oven cleaner. May want to use a little putty knife and some elbow grease to give the cleaner a little head start.

Good luck

I rented a hot pressure washer for a similar project. Took all the crud and anything else that wasn't firmly bonded to the metal right off. Much more aggressive than I expected it to be. While I had it I hit the whole machine, after the first pass with the regular pressure washer with a degreasing solution, then hit it again with the hot.

The machines are expensive to buy and not cheap to rent, so if you have something else that could use a good cleaning up while you have it, get it ready ahead of time. Got any neighbors with somethin' like that. Have them get their stuff ready and they can share the rental cost with you.

Definitely an effective rig for the kind of cleanup you're looking at.

I don't know how anyone is using a pressure washer without blowing crap all over the shop and the next 40 acres. I run stuff through the truck wash and then still have to clean off the trailer and the truck when done and then clean all the stuff off that blew all over me.

I tried that gunk spray degreaser without much luck.

Best I've found for hardened grease and dirt is carb cleaner but that gets expensive for anything big. I was cleaning the carb and everything on the engine on a dr trimmer the other day. Ran out of carb cleaner and switched to brakleen. (big mistake) That brakleen wasn't as good on the caked on dirt and grease and it also starting melting the paint.

Dollar General has about the best price oven cleaner and other cleaners as well.
