can't get into 5th gear (M farmall)

Hello again, I'm in the process of replacing the clutch, pressure plate, throw out, and pilot bearings and noticed leakage from the shafts on the transmission side of tranny and I am going to replace them also. I guess my question is I have not had this M to long and have been only able to get it into 5th gear one time and it seemed to stay there but now all I get is constant grinding and have never been able to get it back into 5th since what are your suggestions regarding no 5th? I have been looking in the archives but most of the posts say that 5th jumps out or something but I've only had the "5th gear luxury" once and it did seem to stay there on its own but now nothing.
Does this sound as easy as a shift fork buildup? Just wanted to say thanks to all of you for great help in my prior posts, GREAT website....

The transmission input shaft and the main shaft with sliding gears for shifting are in line with each other, but are two divided shafts. The fourth and fifth sliding gear has teeth that lock on teeth on the input shaft that are used to lock the shafts together for 5th speed. Teeth could be worn on input shaft, sliding gear or both. Also there is a bearing on the front of main shaft that pilots in input shaft. If its bad the shafts may not line up correct. Problem could be with shifting fork also. Tractors that came on steel used a fifth gear lock out screw. If you got it in gear once and it grindes also, I don't think the lock out is the problem.
Sugjest removing the belt pulley gear box or cover to see what teeth look like. Also if shift fork is moving sliding gear forward as it should and for movement or play in or between main shaft and input shaft.

Looks like the teeth are worn on the input shaft but only the first 1/4" of the spline which appears to be roughly 1" or better of spline. Could it be the fork is not pushing the 4th/5th slider gear far enough therefore requiring shift fork rework? It looks like like a big roll pin needs to be removed on the shifter on the top side of the deck, will this give me access to the fork I might need to rebuild?

The slider only engages a quarter inch at the most.
If it is worn, the teeth in the gear are also. This compounds the problem. Putting a new shaft and gear is the real solution. No split needed. Not too bad on cost. JimN

A bad bearing will cause even good gears to disengage. With a good bearing, the gears can be quite worn and still work OK.
