I'm missing some bearings

Hi Guys, I'm putting the TA back into my Farmall 300 and I noticed I'm missing some roller bearings off the front of the transmission drive. This is where the TA shaft slides onto the transmission. It's the top shaft in the picture. I'm missing about 5. Does anyone know where I can find them? Do I have to buy a whole set? Thanks for any help. Dan

Hello dan,
chances are the rollers are in the bottom of the rear main frame. they fall out when you pulled the Ta. if you go fishing with a magnent you will find them. you can put a thin rubber band around the bearing when you put the TA back in to hold the rollers in place. if you replace the bearing i would fish out the rollers anyway you don't want them floating around in the trans.
Good Luck Ed

Ed pap provides good advice.

In addition, I will tell you what happend to me once with my Super H. I drained the rear end to change fluid. On the advice of someone here on the forum, I pushed an extendable pencil magnet in the drain hole and swiped it all around - pulled out pieces of bearing cage and one ball bearing. Uh-Oh! I reswiped severl times and pulled out more bearing cage material. I kept on until the magnet was coming out basically clean. I had quite a pile of metal.

In an abundance of caution I pulled the entire deck off the tractor and found that the particles and ball were the remains of an "old wound" which had already been repaired and that all the bearings were okay. I felt like I had wasted my time and effort, but then again, I really wasn't going to be happy if there were problems lurking that hadn't bitten me yet. So, I still gained peace of mind, knowing there were no other loose balls in there and that the bearings were fine.

Point: You may need to use a pencil magnet in the drain hole to find all the missing bearings. Plus, it is a good safety check. mike

I already tried that. I drained the tranny and used the magnet through the drain hole like you suggested and didn't get anything. I took one to the local IH dealer to see if they had some and promptly lost it on the way to my truck. After looking again, I am only 2 short and even if one is still in the case I still have to replace the one I lost. Just the way my luck goes. Thanks for the advise, though. You had a great idea. Do you know where I can find some. The IH dealer didn't have any. Dan

The bearing cage is stretched or bearing is worn, the rollers are supposed to stay in. I like to have the belt pulley gear box or cover removed so front of main shaft can be lifted a little at front for exact line up when going back together. You should be able to get a new bearing, but probably didn't want to.

Thanks, D. I'll check with the parts dept at the dealer this time to see about getting a new one. The last time I went to the service dept. to see if they had any extras laying around. Dan

Not trying to tell you what to do, but the bearing is an assembly, you can't buy just the rollers. And don't give up easily on finding any that may be inside as that lower constant mesh gear will sure as heck pick it up some day and "crunch".
