International 504 Clutch suddenly slipping

Yesterday the clutch was fine. No slipping. Went up steep hills fine. Held in gear parked on an incline. This morning the clutch slips so bad I can"t move an inch? Any ideas before I split the tractor?

I had split the tractor a few weeks ago when I rebuilt the bottom end and the clutch plate was well within wear tolerences, so I put it back in.

I forgot to mention that I disconnected the clutch link and moved it all the way back so I could be sure it hadn't come out of adjustment and started riding the clutch. That gave me no change or improvement.

I don't understand your last statement. Adjust your pedal clearance to spec, likely slightly more than an inch. If it has a TA, the TA and the clutch have to be adjusted at the same time.

I had thought that maybe the linkage wasn't adjusted with enough free play. So I just unhitched the pin in the pedal to clutch linkage so I could be sure the clutch was fully engaged.

Scott, that's a case of too little too late. If the pedal was that badly out of adjustment you burned up the clutch and disconnecting the linkage won't indicate anything.

Now, are you SURE it's the clutch? Does your tractor have a TA? My dad bought a tractor here last year that had the TA so far out of adjustment that it burned up the TA clutch. The TA would work in TA mode but not in direct. If you have a bad TA with a bad TA clutch, the tractor will not move.

I would expect some smell from a burning clutch if it's slipping.

Mkirsch, you saved my weekend.

I guess it is always the simplest things. My wife had been cleaning the tractor the evening before and knocked the TA handle so it was between high and low speeds...

I fool with all different types of tractors and often forget how integral the TA is on IH.

Thanks a million. If you are ever through Northeastern Vermont, I owe you a beer.

Glad I could blindly stumble on to the solution for you :)

I may be totally off base here, but shouldn't the TA lever be spring loaded on a 504, like on previous models? It's still located next to the clutch pedal on the side of the torque tube, right?

On the 544, the TA lever is an "over center" type on the side of the console, and could be positioned in the middle.
