Is there anyway to get an alternator in a generator body?

I haven't got my VR yet, and reading yet more complaints about VR's, I'm wishing that alternators could be fit into a generator body somehow, for an original look.

Anyone ever heard of that?

There is a company that converts them, I never learned the name, but it does exist. I will do some googling to see if I can find it. JimN

I'm with you, Red. Isn't that about what it would cost to just ditch the charging system and buy a new battery every time the old one runs down? ;-)

Well, Mike, I never would have imagined but, apparently from what others have posted, they are available. That's what I call "thinking out of the box" on your part. [i:eefa062572] Please, don't get upset - that was meant as a compliment, not a criticism - of the "navy guy".[/i:eefa062572]

As expensive as they are (alternator in a gen body), you might want to reconsider the generator set-up. Personally, I am neither an alternator nor a generator strong advocate; I have had both - and both have worked for me.

Currently, all three of my old Farmalls happen to be equipped with generators (6v) and voltage regulators - a pure coincidence. Still, they work well - after I made sure each had a high quality voltage regulator - from NAPA or from Case/IH. [b:eefa062572]I believe a HIGH QUALITY VR is the key to problem free charging with a generator.[/b:eefa062572] Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Holy crap those are expensive!!! Well, so much for that idea!

What qualifies as a "High Quality" VR?

As much as I hate to say it, I'd have to be guided largely by price and point of purchase. The ones I replaced came from NAPA and were U.S. made and cost around $66 or so. Those seem to hold up well.....

Well, here I found a cheaper one... under 200.

I wonder why the huge difference in price?

At the risk of sounding stupid could someone tell me what the difference really comes down to?
What what comes down to? The difference in price of the alternators, or the difference between a generator and alternators?
