584 Engine Oil

What type of engine oil should I be using in my 1980 International 584 diesel tractor. Living in Ontario, Canada the temperature ranges from minus 35 deg C to plus 30 deg C. My operators manual says not to use a multigrade oil. The dealer says use 15W40. Does the modern multigrade oil nnalert the manual or vice versa?

Hi my brother has 454,495,684,3230(same as 584) and they all get 15W40 in summer and 5W30 in winter and he lives in eastern Ontario. 454 has over 15,000 Hrs on engine and still running strong always used Shell Rotella T and last few years ESSO XD. Just Make sure the oil is made for Diesel engines.

I put 10W30 in the 495, works winter and summer. 15W40 is the normal spec summer oil.
