Farmall H Carb Identification.

Hi Everyone,

Here's the story.....This spring the H wouldn't start. It wasn't getting fuel. So I dropped the sediment bowl and found....well lots of bad gunk in there and on the screen. Cleaned it up, new screen, and it starts and runs...but rough. It will start and run smooth...but soon starts "Loping" (Runs high then low, high, then low.) It seems that it is time for a carb rebuild/cleaning.

#1 How bad is it to do a carb rebuild on these if i have never done one.

#2. Can you help me identify which model carb this is from the picture above? (50981A DA Gas) OR (45108 DB Distillate)?

I will probably get the Complete Comprehensive rebuild kit and do it all right this time.

Thanks for the help guys!

did you remove the brass fitting at carb intake and check and clean the screen there? open petcock at btm. and see if you nave a steady stream of fuel running out.if not then continue and do your thing.

When you open that bottom drain, run it into a glass jar, and then swirl it around to look for sediment in there.

Be sure to ask questions before you buy the kit. Just because it says "comprehensive" does not necessarily mean that all the parts you might need are included. In particular, ask about the "packing gland".

Yes, I do get a steady flow of gas at the petcock, and i also did remove and clean that little screen at the carb when i did the sediment bowl. It will run smooth for about 3 mins or so, and start idling high and low, it will also do it at 3/4 throttle. But it doesn't usually do it at full throttle.

pull the governor cover off and have a look at the wieghts. they may be worn on the pins and sticking. i have seen them get pretty sloppy.

You may not have gotten the governor control into the proper "slot" on the carb or maybe the governor control rod is sticking in the tube leading from the governor to the carb. (Don't even ask how I know that this can happen!) I'd check to make sure its in the little square notch in the carb. This will cause the engine to "lope" and run rough. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
