Farmall B conversion

City girl here again and yes, I am blonde. With all your help, we have learned we own a Farmall B. Now I need to know,
How do I determine if the previous owner converted from 6 to 12 volt.? There is an alternator and the Battery and cables are missing.
Don"t the original volts use a generator?

Thank you all for the help. I was told it runs great, but needs a battery. I just need to move it to work on it.

if it has an alternator, it is more than likely a 12v system. the b came with originally a 6v pos ground if equipped with electric start. your starter should have a saddle mount switch to activate the starter by pushing a rod. it is possible that it has been changed to a solenoid and a push button starter. if you can post some pictures, or email them to me and i can post em for you

Lewens Girl - From the factory the B had a 6 volt generator and was set up for positive ground. With an alternator replacing the generator now it is virtually certain the tractor is now 12 volt negative ground. (It's usually so marked on the alternator case...)

Consequently when hooking up the battery BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN to connect the battery with the negative post grounded! (If you accidentally connect it with the positive post grounded the alternator will be destroyed instantly...)

Take good care of your B - it is a somewhat unusual and desirable little tractor!

I wouldn't speculate. It could be 12 or 6. Most likely 12. I would pull it off quick and take it to the parts store and have them 1. Test it to see if it's still good and 2 have them tell you the voltage and polarity. I know a few guys that would buy a 12v alternator and have the shop put in a 6v regulator in to it. I'd be surprised if it were 6v but hey it won't cost you anything to get it tested. Sounds like you need to go to the parts store anyway to get cables.

Be careful...I think they make Positive ground alternators too. I burnt up one on a TD6 crawler b/c the starter wasn't turning and thought I had the ground wrong. Switched it to negative and burnt up the bridge rectifier (diodes that turn the AC to DC) in the alternator.
