Okay,I pulled the cover and looked underneath. It's internal. All the linkage are hooked-up. I've since pulled the seat, cover the seat sits on and the shift lever assembly. Now I'm looking at the cast piece wondering if I should pull it off and take a look underneath. Does anyone know what I'll find? Or what could have came loose. I still have reverse and park.

You will find that the high low shift fork has come off the shift rail. Pulling the range trans cover however involves the reverse shifting shaft that extends downward and you need to pull cover off side also. If you have that extra fuel tank along side of course that hides the side cover so that needs to come off. (there was a special tool released by IH so you didn't have to pull reverse shifter shaft but I still prefered to pull side cover). When you get that far what you find will determine next steps to take.

Thanks PETE 23, The IH sevice MGR said he had a special tool for something, so I'll bet it's what you're talking about. I hate the thought of removing the side tank, but you did give me new direction, and I didn't become a farmer by not saving money doing it myself. I'll let you know how it comes out tomorrow. J

There are two tools for the job. I made both of mine. One is a puller to push the reverse shaft out of the cover as you remove it. You can easily get by without this one if you are careful to make sure the reverse shaft stays in the transmission as you lift the cover.

The other tool is to position the detent arm so that when you install the cover the arm will clear the reverse detents. If you can look at the one the dealer has you can see how easy it is to make one. See if they will let you make an outline of the shape. If you take your cover along they can show you how it works.

Snap ring slipped of the shaft. Special tool helped keep from removing the tank. Simple when you know what your looking at. Thanks for the help! Tractor is out of the wet spot and I"m putting in a new cab kit.

Good enough, now the tricky part is to get cover on with out messing up the detent, here is where the second part of the special tool comes into play. That brings up another point, that dam aux tank. How many people actually need them, and worst that that, the smaller 86 series used a smaller main tank . Made more sense to just put the big main tank on and for get about that aux tank. The 50 series tractors were much harder to get that tank off though, I had the 86 pretty much down pat. Good luck.

in shifter concil snip ring came off take concil off you see it at end of shaft its the high and low range rod your shifter is not catching the notch to shift it do not take top of trans off its in concol were shifter is
