M Distributor Gets Wet

My 49 M has an add-on vertical distributor.I've always thought the upright dist. were Delco-Remy. This distributor has the IH part no. 353898R1 cast in the dist. housing which is the same part no.as the horizontal mounted IH dist. Did Delco-R provide the IH distributors? My problem is when it's left out in light rain the points & condensor must dried out before it will start. After sitting out in 1.3" rain over 12 hrs. The tractor started but popped and banged for a minute or so before it stopped. When I removed the cap the distributor was level full of water. The points & condensor were completely submerged. The cap for this dist. has no overlap over the distributor housing. The distributor has the breaker cover with gasket (part #352284R2). Is there available a cap with an overlap lip covering the dist. housing? (Like my 656 dist. has) If so does anyone have a part no. from someone? NAPA, CaseIH, etc. My parts book only shows one cap.
I'm thinking I may have to put a wide rubber band around the cap & distributor seam.

This may sound silly but if you can't put it inside put a tarp over the tractor.
I would check the transmission oil also from rain getting in through the shifter.
After the tractor has set not running for a few days open the transmission drain plug and see if any water comes out.

I haven't seen the vertical distribuors but IH seemed to have probelms with the H4 magneto and wet weather as many tractors have had small shields bolted to the cowlings above the magnetos to keep the rain away. My Super-A has a series of bolts above the magneto position and I presume they eventually replaced the magneto with a distributor which does not seem to as readily affected by water. At displays or shows most magnetos seem to get enclosed in plastic bags overnight.

WOK: I solved the same problem by wiping clear caulking comp'd around each seam or joint and when it dried it was hardly noticable. I've had no problems since. To keep water from getting into the transmission, I cut a 6X6 piece of inner tube, cut a small hole in the center and stretched it over the knob and down the shifter. Not attractive but effective,

Try a bead of clear silicone around the cap just above where the cap meets the distributor casting. Somewhat like an umbrella.

Been on several long three day tractor rides and sometimes we do drive in the rain and never seen an I-H mag get wet and stop. I even show tractors and they do get wet from time to time and never had a mag get wet yet. I do see some at shows with the mags and dist covered just figured they didnt have things in shape. I even sometimes run them thru a car wash.

I use a shifter boot for a ford 8N on my H gearshift and it stopped water from getting into the transmission. Haven't had any water in dist problems but mine is horizontal.

Buy some asparagus and use the blue band as a seal. 1981 through 84 Toyota Corollas have a very neat snap on distributor cover, JimN

One thing not mentioned is lots of caps have holes in the side. They are toward the bottom mounted on a horizontal distributor. Does yours have the holes?

I walked 2 u-pull yards to try to find one of those for my tractor. No where to be seen. I had one on my 90 toyota. I threw it out b/c it was a pain! Wish i would have kept it now!! My step dad had a great idea. Rubber kitchen glove with the tips cut off. You could tape the tips up then to keep the water out. Cheap and very effective.

A little sillicone grease put where the cap sits on the distributor will stop it. If you have a hole in the cap, leave that open as the vent tube system is supposed to pull in air through the cap and distributor and associated housings to clear condensation out.
