I just bought my first tractor, it is a IH 340 U gas. It needs some fixing up! The hydraulics for the rear didn't work. And the steering has alot of play in it and is very hard to turn at times. It has been converted over to a 3 point in the rear. It was originally a Tel-a-depth system. They just left off the rod from the back by the cylinder. Anyway I found that one of the spider gears in the control valve was broken and missing several teeth. From what I have researched this was a common problem and hard to find the gears. And that I need a different type of valve anyway. What Kind of control valve will bolt up to to lines and manifold. Now to the steering it is manual steering system with lots of play in it, almost a full turn. Should I just try and rebuild it or I was thinking of maybe converting it to power steering. Is this possible or smart to do? Also missing the PTO engagement rod that goes from the lever to the pto, is there somewhere I could get one or do I just need to make one. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

rehm: Any factory remote valve from a 300, 400, 230, 330, 350, 450, 240, 340, 460 and 560, will bolt right up. You can use the lever and linkage that operated your tele a depth. also use the same plumbing as was used for tele a depth.

The box may just need to be adjusted. If the steering binds up then usually that is because the dog is set too tight to the worm gear on the steering shaft. But if it is almost a full turn of the wheel in play it sounds like the dog may need to be rebuilt. If you have the time I would take the steering box apart and check all the gears and the dog. Also make sure that the PO didn't fill the box with grease like so many of them have.

If this is to be a working tractor you may want to upgrade your tractor to orbital power steering like on tractors and combines built after the early to mid 60's. That steering that you have now could become a money-pit. I can't rember the name of the company that makes this upgrade kit but I have seen mention of it on this site. It would be worth your time to check this out and compare prices. Armand

The original manual steering is hard to turn (new) they have marginal gear teeth, and a cam follower that is probably almost worn through. See parts diagrams caseih.com
The jacksonpowersteering.com company makes kits that do it well. JimN

I found this valve from a 450 do you think it would work?

rehm: I see one thing wrong, the long stem for changing from double to single action may have to be changed to short stem. The reason for the long stem on 350 and 450 was so it extended up through hood. 300 and 400 had short stem, thus one had to remove the half hood panel just to change from double to single action.

The long stem may very well work on the 240, long as it's not physically interfering with other parts, function or your own possible injury.
