IH240U Grinding noise

Is it normal for a IH 240 to grind it gears when you put in the clutch and put it in gear, I have to keep the idle low, and move the shifting stick very slow to get it in gear,

I did replace the clutch and presser plate and throw out bearing,

On my 460U, different animal, but similar design philosophy IMHO, I push in the clutch and count to 5 before I select another gear.

This eliminates any grinding.

The "fast reverser" option, if you have that does not seem to grind the same way and can be shifted quicker IMHO.

(Jury is still out on my 340U...currently undergoing rebuild).

Did you adjust the fingers on the new pressure plate after installing it? Most new clutches do not come with pre-adjusted fingers and this might be causing it to release unevenly. Your clutch housing is webbed underneath so if your careful you can get under the left side of it with a flashlight and watch the clutch shaft come to a halt by pulling down on the clutch pedal.

My 240 U works best if I put it in first gear and then into whatever gear I need. David.................

I won't claim to have a solution for you but my 240 has never done that except when I get in too much of a hurry. Sounds like you have an issue there. :(

IH240: You replaced clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. How about the pilot bushing? A bad pilot bushing can cause the problem you mention.

It could also be those fingers on pressure plate need adjusting.

A third factor, you may be just too impatient, after all this is 1950s technology not a modern day standard shift with transmission brake. We always had to throttle those tractors down for getting them in gear from standing idling.

I would agree with Hugh. Just need to give it a little bit of time. When I go from forward to reverse or vice versa I lever the shifter in gear until I am stopped that tends to help. Also if you are going from 4th to 5th trying to get up to road speed you are going to need to double clutch it. Takes some getting used to but is quicker and better for the tranny.
