I have a 1938 W30 with 4 speed gear box it only does 2 1/2 mph it also does around the same speed in 3rd is there a problem i read somwhere that it should do around 12 mph It also has been on steels early in life now on rubbers has 4th gear been locked out for steel wheel use?
Any info appreciated

you should be able to tell if its locked out. if it wont go in 4th its locked out. no they dont go that fast.i have heard of a high gear in the later ones, 1940 but have not found one yet.

early tractors had 3 speeds in them. later on they went to a 4 speed, somewhere right around 36 IIRC. If your tractor was equipped on rubber NEW, it would have the letter "P" after the serial numbe ron the tag. Only then could you get the 'fast 4th' gear in it. if it came out on steel, bout 4mph was the top speed.

Hi rustred yes it goes into 4th gear was hoping they did somthing at the factory to reduce speed funny thing about 3rd and 4th speed having nearly no difference in speed
