Can anyone help me? I was mowing hay with my IH 656 and broke off the PTO engaging lever. If you try to operate it by lifting on the "linkage" jsut above the PTO it will engage as long as there is no load on it. Once you hook a mower or bailer to it, it will run for a second and then stop eventhought the PTO is engaged. Does anyone have any ideas? I have noticed that the rubber boot going into the PTO linkage is split, could it be leaking pressure there causing the PTO to stop running?

The PTO on a 656 is probabaly the most sensitive part of that tractor. If the linkage has any play in it at all it will not work properly. The only way to adjust the PTO is with a hyd. gauge. This is obtained at fast idle.(full throttle)When you have the gauge on it you can see if the proper adjustment can be obtained. when the linkage pulls the plunger up, it must not let it fall down even the slightest when the linkage breaks over. If you can not adjust it then you have to pull the PTO out of the tractor and rebuild it. this is all covered in an IH service manual. Hope this will be of some help
