Need help with non-start IH C-175 Gas motor

New here-

I bought a 3514 loader backhoe that was running strong last season, but has been extensively "tinkered" on in an attempt to get it restarted this year.

Prior owner did not disrupt timing, but replaced all electrical components (wires, coil, dist, points, etc.)

Ruled out fuel issues and now turning attention to electrics.

Found the wires hooked up wrong (running clockwise rather than counterclockwise).

Right now it fires 3x"s on ether then quits.

Current questions:

With the motor at TDC, should the rotor be pointing to #1 or #4 ?

Is this a + or - system ?

Would be a great help if a fellow owner could snap a picture of the cap + wires to get orientation correct.

Thanks in advance!

You'll have to check for #1 cylinder coming up on compression & then look at the timing pointer. #1 can be up on both the exh & compression stroke. You need it on compression TDC & then rotor should be pointing to #1 in the dist cap.

Thanks-
I got that far with it today. I noticed on other boards that the older IH motors set the timing on the #4 cylinder. I have yet to find anything to compare with this one, so feeling around in the dark at this point.

Any idea whether this is positive or negative ground? Haven"t checked the #"s yet, but owner thinks it is late 60"s early 70"s 3514 IH loader.

My other thought is this could be a weak spark due to aftermarket coil. Carb is a new Zenith.

The plug wires should be in this firing order
since the rotor turn CW. With No1 around 1 o'clock. Hal

2-1
4-3

ElToro,

This distributor turns counter clockwise.
crank shaft turning clockwise viewed from front, distributor turning CCW when viewed from rotor.
Manual states "Rotation viewing drive end"= clockwise.

Do you have one of these engines?
I have nothing here to compare to.
Thanks-

I don't have that engine, but it was used in some of the farm tractors. If the rotor is turning CCW
try this firing order. You need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke to see where your rotor is pointing. Hal

1-2
3-4 CCW

560's were the first IH tractors to have negative ground, & I believe that they were introduced in 1959. Probably someone on here will have other info which is more exact. Might possibly be that the industrial engines/ applications were pos ground for some time after this. We really need a book for this---wonder if anything is avail. on-line?

Back at it again today with no luck.
Has spark, gas, firing order was checked and rotor aligns at the 1 o'clock position at TDC

3 1
4 2

Going to get it brought home and work on it from there.

Backhoe is being brought home today.
I'm wondering if the battery could possibly be in the wrong orientation?

The wires suggest a + ground system, but the battery is installed with the - terminal on the red wire.

Got it figured out with the help of an original operators manual.

Distributor should be arranged like this:

24
