544 water pump leak

I replaced a water pump on my Farmall 544 gas. On the old pump, the rear cover plate over the impeller had bolts in all the holes except the one that sat against a rubber grommet between the engine and pump. I got the new pump and it didnt come with a rear cover plate so had to use the one off the old pump. I installed the bolts the same as I found them and after installing the pump and filling the radiator, it is leaking around the rear cover plate in the area where the grommet is with no bolt? I assume I should find another bolt and stick it in the hole behind the grommet? Anyone else ever replace this style water pump before? I'm just not sure a bolt and the grommet will both fit but thats what it looks like it needs to me.

No. That grommet and the passage it seals are part of the cooling system (in my opinion it's a kludgy design but it is what it is). Take it back apart, clean up all the surfaces (a bench top belt sander is great for the plate) and put it back together using a new grommet, new gaskets, and silicone.
 
Well, I did use silcone when I originally put it together and the gasket kit came with a new grommet which I used. The only place it leaks is right at the cover at the grommet? What is the purpose of the gromet and hole in the plate behind it? The gasket has a hole in this spot as well.
 
Well, I took it all back apart and figured out that the hole with the grommet is a small bypass and goes all the way into the impeller cavity. Im figuring I didnt get enough gasket material smeared all the way around this hole and it leaked right there. I made new gaskets and used Form-a -gasket and got it all back together. Im gonna let it set up till morning then fill it and check for leaks. Hope it works!
