Need your help please. I have a request from a fellow in So. Dakota to build an orchard style (underslung) exhaust system for his 1955 IH 300 Utility tractor. Can somebody point me to a place that I can look at a parts page and or pictures so I can get a good idea of the pipe shape?
I've made up pipes for about everything but not this model. I usually like to have the old pipe here to duplicate (or in a wonderful world) the tractor to fit to, but 2000+ miles sort of prevents this. I have no idea if this/these parts are still available from Case/IH or not, but if Case/IH is anything like Deere in that respect it's not worth asking about. Would be nice to get at least the head pipe on hand as a pattern.
Thanks, Steve Crum. Crum Equipment Co.

Go to caseih.com-search for parts-locate 300U in list -click on engine-there are about 3 different versions of exhaust for this model-hope there is one there you need.

You don"t have the old pipe to use as a pattern, and you don"t have the tractor. I don"t think there is any way you can fabricate a new system and hope to have it fit. The case/ih site will show a drawing of the pipe and give you the part numbers, but there are no dimensions given.

I agree it's nearly impossable without a pattern. I found the parts page I needed and printed it, there are at least 3 pipes for this tractor and it appears all have been obsoleted, otherwise I would buy a new one for a pattern. I mainly need an idea of the configuration and sizing for quoting.
I'm making an underslung now for a Cub and found I need to order new bending dies for the 1 1/4" tubing.
Most times if someone can provide the pattern pipe and I can keep it, I allow a decent credit on the purchase of the new one I make. However if I have to go hunting and buy a pattern, that time is considered into the price. I've been doing this a lot of years.

There are many 300 U tractors (350Us are essentially the same) many had through the hood pipes, while a great number also had down pipes.
There should be an example close enough to your location to measure on sight. The manifold is the difficult part, as the original could be different than the example you find. Best of luck, JimN

I had one built by a local muffler shop (not really intending to take bread off your table, but that's what I did). This was probably 8 years ago. I had checked with the local Case/IH dealer and they could get it for me, but the cost was prohibitive.

Fred, no problem on that, there's plenty of business to go around. I've priced these type of parts with different manufacturers in the past. Most are no longer available. And thus they become made of 'UNOBTAINIUM' which is rediculously expensive. I use only 304 stainless (which isn't much cheaper). Muffler shops are great for making up custom pipes but as such, wothin a year the pipe is looking pretty tough again unless you fuss with it all the time. I've been quite amazed at what some folks get invested in a restoration project, then put a $20 muffler shop exhaust on it. I had a funny one happen several years ago. I had a guy call and ask the price for a muffler for a John Deere 720 gas, I told him the price and he told me I was outta' my tree. A day later another fellow called and wanted a muffler for a John Deere 70 gas. I gave him the price and he ordered it and needed it asap. Got it right out to him. The same guy called the following week and ordered the same muffler again. I asked him if he was finishing another tractor, he said no, Over that weekend he took the tractor to a show and sold the muffler right off the tractor to another guy for twice the price and the guy's tin muffler. Putting 2 and 2 together I asked him about the guy he sold the muffler to, he said it was a guy with a nice looking 720...(and apparently a lot of cash).

I can email you the parts diagram. It doesn't give you any dimensions or anything. It will be in a pdf format. Drop me an email it you want it.
