H vs. Super H??

How can you tell the difference between an H and a Super H other than the serial tag and decal--I"m talking about physical differences. Thanks

If you were looking at a late 53 H and a early 53 SH it could be hard to tell, so I would check that the engine is a C-164. If its a earlier H or later SH there,s several more differences. Date codes would be one thing. Most H except serial # 391358 and after used steel brake covers and all SH used cast brake covers (disc brakes) held on by 5 cap screws and they just had a bolt with spring that screwed in or out to adjust. Starters could be changed easy but only the late H with disc brakes and the suppers came with a starter switch mounted on top of starter and operated by a rod. Late SH used a center housing that the starter mounted with 3 bolts. Rest of H and SH used 2 bolts

Jerry - The letters "C-164" cast in block (look on the upper right side above the oil filter canister) and the presence of disc brakes are a sure sign.

Check also at the year (last) character of the date codes on the larger castings. Y and Z (for '53 and '54) indicate a Super H. An X with a "11" or "12" month charactor (for Nov/Dec '52) are probably OK to. Months earlier with an X, and all year letters lower in the aphabet indicate an older, non-Super H.

Bob: Not sure I'd bet much money on that "11" or "12" month item. There could be a difference between tractors built in IL and the little tractors built at Loiusville. The little ones are the ones I see most these days, and it's quite common for those castings to be 6-10 months before the tractor was built.

My Super A is the 97th built in 1953, and every casting on it is April, May or June 1952. I've seen numerous other tractors with that spread, and yes they were all Loiusville tractors.
