Farmall H Transmission Seal question?

Hey guys, I am trying to get the nut off the front of the lower transmission shaft. This is the nut that has a slot to put the shaft in which drives the lift-all pump. The reason I am takeing this out is to change that seal as it is leaking lots of oil. I cannot turn that and get it off as I have tried leaving the shaft in and turning it with the flywheel pinned. I used a 18in pipe wrench and I belive their is an easyer way. Can you guys please help.

Take pump drive shaft out, put trans in 5th gear, lock brakes, use a square shaft bar in the slot, place it were you can put your foot on it and give it a good shove, it will come loose, good luck

If mike's suggestions don't work, pull shift lever out , lock in two gears at once by moving two forks, that will definetely hold trans shaft from turning. I have had to cut off a few of them in my day, usual reason is a hydraulic pump failure like the big spring inside locking up pump gears and that really tightens that nut or strips the threads.

I had to weld a piece of square stock that fit the slot to an old socket and use an impact wrench to get mine loose on an M. The threads are normal right hand.

Another method is to engage the PTO then grab the PTO shaft with a big (18" or 24") pipe wrench. Place the wrench handle tight against the drawbar frame to keep the PTO shaft from turning.

Now take a 2nd large pipe wrench and stick it on the coupling nut, then give the wrench your best tug - or give it a good lick with a large hammer.

Once the nut breaks free it will usually spin right off.

I've got one of those four piece pry bar sets that every body's been selling for years. The square part of the bigger bar fits the slot perfectly. High gear, maybe, brakes locked and grunt. Comes right off.

Thanks for the Help guys I will take another stab at it tomarrow morning and let you know how it turns out. I guess I just have to take off the skirt and put some effort into it.
