756 gas starts then dies

Bypassed start button with remote, it starts then immediately dies. Pulled gas line at carb, it's getting plenty of gas.

I'm thinking wiring is screwed up.
Wiring is frayed, anybody have schematics? Or what I can bypass to get it to run. No way they will pay for new harness.

We have 40 acres of hay down, help would be appreciated

no, it was running in the field then died and they couldn't get it to run again. Pulled it up to shop to work on. Bypassed the start button and it will start but then immediately die. That's why I think it's in the wiring.

Why would pulling the starter (which we haven't) have anything to do with not starting? Starter works (with remote start button hooked up) just won't stay running.

Some tractors have a contact on the starter that bypasses the coil resistor while cranking. If the resistor or the wiring connecting it is open the engine will fire while cranking but die as soon as you let up on the starter switch.

I agree. Either burned out ballast resistor, failed ignition switch or a break in the wiring somewhere in between.

I'd first look at the ballast resistor (temporarily short the two resistor terminals and see if the tractor will run...)

Run a wire from the + terminal on the battery directly to the + terminal on the coil. If it runs, then the coil is definitely not getting power from its normal source.

Don't leave it this way, or you will burn out the coil.

OK, that's exactly what it is doing. Starts while cranking and dies as soon as you release start button.

Now, where is this resistor in relation to either the coil or the solenoid?

If it is the wiring does anyone have a detailed layout of at least the essential wires?

Thanks for your answers so far.

Basic trouble shooting situation to see where you have current flowing and where you do not. A 756 doesn't use a ballast resistor at the coil, the resistance is in the wiring harness between bypass terminal on starter solenoid and ign switch. From what you are saying about bypassing starter switch it sounds like you lost power to ign switch and need to check that out. Like one suggested, run wire directly from known current source to plus terminal on coil to see if it runs, but you will need a resistor in the circuit to use it this way for more than just a few minutes.

That sure sounds like a bad ballast resistor. You can buy a 12 volt coil from Napa with a builtin resistor for around $18.00. Their p/n is IC14SB. Run a new wire from the battery to the - terminal on the new coil & reconnect the wire to the points. Then see if it will keep running. If it does then run the new wire to your ignition switch & then to the coil. Hal

If the start button is also not working unless bypassed, I believe the issue is in the wire supplying the key with voltage. It would act that way exactly. Trace the wire from the starter/relay/solenoid (which ever it has) terminal that is connected to the battery. This big terminal will have a smaller wire (10ga or so) leading to the instrument panel. Being a "tractordummy", I would like to know why you state connecting a wire from the battery to the "-" terminal on the coil when other replys state to connect a wire from the battery to the "+" terminal on the coil. Is it due to using the coil that you mentioned.

Thanks,

DJ

If tractor is wired correctly it is negative - ground so neg - terminal of coil will be going to the points and you would hook hot battery wire to positive + side of coil. It will run eiether way but spark to plug would be reversed polarity and not proper. Just be sure you run current (hot wire) through coil, out other side to points and not directly to the points as that would be a short circuit, fry wires time.
