mw hand clutch on 53 super h

just purchased a 53 super h with a m&w hand clutch. my question is shouldnt the hand clutch always be engaged. the handle does not want to stay in the engaged position(handle foward) while running the tractor. do you have to hold the clutch engaged or should it stay on its own? i am not very knowledgable on this hand clutch and have not located a manual for it yet.
 
It is a Over center system. When pushed forward it should stay there. I do not know the adjustment procedure, But it is not difficult. If it is not Overcenter correctly, it will possibly slip. JimN
 
I started installing one in my H today. The clutch uses ball bearings that roll up a ramp and into a slight indention to keep it engaged. The H is suppose to have 30 lbs of force (push or pull, however you look at it)to engage the clutch. Mine has the instructions on the clutch cover plate. It is adjusted with the nut on the shaft under the cover plate
 
The clutch needs to be adjusted. Take the small round cover off the side of the clutch. Inside you will see a large nut, tighten it a little until it takes about 30 lbs. of pressure to engage the clutch lever.
 
You know what I think it wrong? You say the lever wont stay forward. Well does the tractor keep moving? If it does, then I think your levers lock nut is loose and the lever is rotating on you. May be nothing wrong with the clutch.

to answer your question GeneMo no it does not move when the handle goes back. maybe i dont have the nut tight enough to keep the clutch engaged. there is a washer behind the nut, it looks like sombody flattened all the tabs. is that the actual lock washer for the adjusting nut? if it is then thats my problem, the nut is backing itself off.
 
I had put the hand clutch manual in the Vintage Ads section a while back. I think all the adjustment stuff is in there. Search for M&W, should be there.
