Whadda Think?

I wanted to use my H to stack hay in the hay yard this year as the other loader is out in the field.

Went to fill 'er with fuel and it just stopped running like ya shut the switch off.

Plenty of fuel, cleaned the sediment bowl, cleaned the carb screen, made sure there was juice at the points and that they were breaking.

Just like ya shut the switch off and it hasn't ran since.

I'm thinking maybe the coil gave up because it won't even attempt to fire.

What's your best guess?

My Super A did exactly the same thing. And, after trying everything else, the switch WAS turning off. It had a loose wire. Doesn't hurt to look.

Gotta good breaking signal at the points, so that should rule out everything on the primary side of the ignition.

Nope, doesn't even try to pop cold 'er hot. Solid wire on the secondaries, think that should rule out plug/coil wires.

Either coil or N/seat stuck shut, I'm thinkin'.

I'll have to check for some semblance of spark next time I'm out there to decide which way to look.

First time the little tractor has ever failed me. :>(

Thanks,

Allan

Can"t just go by what seems to be a hot spark when just firing, when actually trying to run the coil can fail even though the spark "looks" hot. I"m not a tractor expert, but tinkered with a few old motors.

But this really sounds like some sort of a connection issue.

You"ll probably have it tracked down before you ever see these replies, I"ll betcha

Coil sounds like the best bet to me. Just replaced the coil on my 300 last fall and fixed the same problem. I"ve been told to always start with the easiest, most logical fix, which would be a loose wire or bad coil.

Pull that plate off of your ignition and light switch box. I've found all sorts of critters in there and they've chewed the wires. Might be just a loose wire in there.

Do you have spark from the coil wire and also from each of the plug wires??? My Oliver 77 did the same thing as your H did a few years ago and I had spark from the coil wire but no spark to the plug wires. I had a rotor go bad but by looking at it you could not tell it was bad

Niehbor had an M that did the same thing. It was the Ign. switch. Had bad contacts from setting all winter. Check you switch.-Bill

Pull that coil wire and place it close to the block. Then twizzle the points with a screw driver to see if it has spark. If the spark is strong, check the location of the rotor in relationship to TDC. JimN

That's going to be a 1300 weight on a 14 foot fulcrum. Want to gues the torque in foot lbs on the loader brackets, and on the front wheels' Then double that from a 2g load when you hit a bump. Your'e going to break something....
Put that F11 on the M. and use the H. for sickle mowing and raking.

1300# weight? How many horseshoes do you put into your round bales? Boy is we clip a round bale up here in Wisconsin that hits 800# we figure it must have been too wet to bale anyway!

My H does all my work on my farm, it cuts(9 foot haybine) rakes and square bales, no live power, but I am used to it, works great. I have yet to run it out of power baling or mowing, when I had the loader on it I moved 800 lb bales all the time, no problems other then power steering would hav been nice. I also have a M,but prefer the H,uses way less fuel and does the same work I would use the M for.Oh yeah did I mention I bought the H for one hundred dollars out of a old farm yard where it sat 20 years? All I have done to it is replace a bolt in the pressure plate....Jim

Try an SMTA for an hour and you'll think you died and went to heaven. OR a 66/86 series diesel if you want to really get going.

Yup, I am sure I would, I wish I could afford bigger, but I cant so I make do with what I have,if it breaks I fix it,Until a few years ago I was putting up 3500 bales of hay with a old horse drawn sickle mower pulled behind my tractor,a old steel wheel rake and a NH 66 Baler, moved up to a new idea trailer sickle mower and a 68 hayliner I paid fifty bucks for, from there when they died I went to the case 555/heston pt-10 haybine and a side delivery rake with rubber on the front and steel tail wheels and a 270 NH baler that I got for free..You make do with what you have,,Jim

800LBS why so light??? Shoot I have to make a bale that is less then half normal to have one as light as 800lbs. I bale with an old NH850 chain baler and my bales are around 2000lbs. First year I used it my bales where so heavy I had to use a Cat. 950 to move them because my loader tractor would not lift them but it would instead lift the rear tires off the ground which was not good

Hi Ya Dustin!

Hmmmm, dunno. I've got a real good light at the points. If the condenser were shorted, it would be dead at the points connection, wouldn't it?

Just hope to criminey that it hasn't jumped time due to that hydraulic pump peeling the gears 'er something.

It should have the heavier gears because it is after the breakpoint serial number.

If you think it has spark spray some WD-40 straight into the carb air intake while you crank it over (easier with 2 people). Or pop the plugs out and shoot WD-40 in all four cylinders. If she fires up for a moment with that test ignition is O.K. and you are getting no fuel. BTW this works great to start a sluggish engine that has been in storage.
