Ih 350 Hi Utility

Started working on a IH 350 Hi Utilty the other day, it's marked 12v. Generator doesn't seem to be making any voltage (tested with multi meter). And the ammeter needle goes to the + side when discharging..... Possibly wired backward? Or are they a 12v Positive ground system? I haven't pulled the dash yet to look.
Thanks

They are a nice low production tractor.
The battery should be put in positive ground. If it his negative, I would turn it around. Then, before starting it, I would polarize the generator. First connect a jumper between a good ground and the F terminal on the Generator. (this allows the field to get full polarizing current) The next step is at the voltage regulator by using a piece of solid #12 wire to jump between the Bat terminal, and the Arm (or Gen) terminal. Touch it for only one second. It will spark, but that is normal, it will not shock you. Now remove the Field ground, and start it. It should charge (needle to Plus) and it should be good to go. Charging voltage (on a charged up good battery should be between 14.2 and 14.5 volts, when running at 3/4 throttle or more. JimN
