Farmall H not starting

My 1941 Farmall H Does not want to start after being idol over the winter. Found that Starter switch was bad and replaced. Then tried to start and found that engine would fire for about 5-10 seconds or as long as I kept the starter engaged. Will take off and run for more that 10 seconds. Is it an electrical or carburetor problem?

Probably fuel related, and probably the culprit is the needle valve stuck in the closed position because of varnished up old gas. You might get lucky and get it loosened up by gently tapping on the top front of the carb, or, remove the fuel line where it fits into the carb inlet and then spray a bunch of carb cleaner in there and then do the tapping thing again. If that doesn't work, you'll have to remove and disassemble the carb, BUT before you do that, make sure the shut-off on the sediment bowl is OPEN, and there IS fuel in the tank. (don't laugh, we've all done it)

Did you put the ignition power supply wire ton the starter cable terminal instead of the battery cable terminal when replacing the switch?
Then the distributor only has electric power when holding the starter switch down.
If your lights only work when the starter is cranking that confirms the incorrect placement of the wire.

When you are scratching for ignition or fuel, I find a quick shot of starting fluid will help make a determination. If the engine sputters for a little bit, its likely fuel related. If nothing happens you likely have an ignition problem.

If you have a ballast resistor between the ignition switch and the coil it could the culprit.
Run a separate wire from the battery to the coil
then see if it will start & run. Hal

Well I would suggest first when ever you shut down the tractor close the fuel supply off the l shaped handle on the sed bowl under the gas tank. I always put fuel stab in my tanks over the winter all gas engines lawn mower back up gen ect any 4 stroke motor I use some stuff called SEA FOAM When you resatrt open fuel supply up wait a few mins choke it and should run providing all the wiring is correct. Your running prob sounds like a goffed up wiring connection or connections Need to know the system I have a 45 H mag system with cutout. My tractor starts in less than one crank. E mail me some details and I will try to help TOM
